What is an OT and how can they help?

An Occupational Therapist is an allied health professional with unique skills in supporting clients to participate fully in a range of occupations across their day, week, year and life. Occupations are all the activities that you want or need to do on any given day. This may be as simple as sleeping, getting dressed, or as complex as organising yourself to meet deadlines at work or learning to drive.

An Occupational Therapist can help you to discover your strengths and to identify the tasks that are more challenging for you. They will look at your goals and areas of support needs holistically and help you to determine priorities so that interventions make a real difference to your life.

Essentially, if there is something you want to do but cannot, there is a good chance an OT can help, or at least point you in the right direction.
Some of the different areas OTs can help with include:
  • Self care – showering, dressing, grooming, hygiene, menstrual management etc
  • Independent home skills – cooking, cleaning, laundry
  • School skills – handwriting, number skills, regulating energy within the classroom, executive functioning skills
  • Work skills – following routines, personal responsibility
  • Community skills – public transport, personal safety, road safety, shopping skills, protective behaviours
  • Social and personal relationship skills – learning how to interact with peers, developing healthy boundaries
  • Regulation skills – learning about emotions and sensory needs, helping to match regulation levels to the task at hand
